2015Shanghai's exhibition industry leads the nation in 2015
2015 was the concluding year of the '12th Five-Year Plan'. According to statistics, Shanghai hosted 749 exhibitions throughout the year with a total exhibition area of 15.132 million square meters, a year-on-year increase of 18.29%, successfully completing the target of 15 million square meters set in the '12th Five-Year Plan'. Especially after the full operation of the National Convention and Exhibition Center, Shanghai's exhibition venues, with an available exhibition area of 1 million square meters and indoor exhibition space of 800,000 square meters, ranked first in the world.
In addition to exhibition scale, the exhibition industry in Shanghai maintains a high development status in internationalization, marketization, and specialization: In 2015, the proportion of international exhibition projects reached 34.58%, with professional and market-oriented levels at over 98% and 95% respectively. Exhibition organizing companies also show diversified development trends. Among the top ten main and organizing companies selected by the association in 2015, state-owned enterprises, foreign enterprises, and private enterprises accounted for 40%, 40%, and 20% respectively. Many out-of-town host companies, such as Guangzhou Zhongmao, have entered Shanghai, further enhancing the attractiveness and influence of the exhibition industry.

Shaping Shanghai into an international exhibition capital is a crucial measure to support international economics, finance, trade, and the construction of an international science and technology innovation center. The 2016 Development Report of the Exhibition Industry points out that building an international exhibition capital requires attention to ten key indicators, including: focusing on the development of 20 leading conference and exhibition companies during the '13th Five-Year Plan' period, striving for Shanghai to maintain a top 20 ranking in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), and attracting more than 50 exhibitions with an area of over 100,000 square meters.
President of the Industry Association Chen Advanced proposed that by the end of the '13th Five-Year Plan', Shanghai will initially establish itself as an international exhibition capital. By 2020, the strength of exhibition companies in the city, the competitiveness of the exhibition industry, economic and social benefits, and market environment will significantly improve: professional exhibition companies will reach 200, the total exhibition area will be 20 million square meters, the proportion of international exhibitions will exceed 80%, and direct revenue from the exhibition industry will reach 1.8 billion yuan.
