On August 29, the Secretariat of the Boao Forum for Asia held a press conference in Beijing, announcing that a Global Economic Development and Security Forum would be established under the framework of the Boao Forum for Asia. The first conference of the Global Economic Development and Security Forum will be held in China in 2020.

The first Global Economic Development and Security Forum conference in 2020 will take Joint Action for Shared Prosperity as its theme and will study and discuss cutting-edge technologies and hot topics related to security in Asia and around the world. The conference will include an opening ceremony, a main forum, several sub-forums and roundtable meetings, and will also hold an expo.

Li Baodong, secretary-general of the Boao Forum for Asia, said that establishing a dedicated forum platform from the perspective of economic development and security is the first initiative of its kind internationally. The Boao Forum for Asia has established the Global Economic Development and Security Forum with the purpose and goal of building, sharing and achieving security together, and is committed to building a global platform for the international community to discuss related issues.

Li Baodong said that the current global economy lacks sufficient growth momentum, and the connection between economic development and security has become increasingly close. It has become a major international issue of common concern to all parties. To respond to the new international situation and development needs, the forum is designed to provide the international community with a global platform for discussion.

Tsang Wai-hung, chair of the Global Economic Development and Security Forum conference of the Boao Forum for Asia, said that economic development and security have always been closely related. At present, global economic development and security are under pressure on both fronts, and the linkage and interaction between the two are becoming stronger. First, traditional economic security issues are receiving great attention. Second, non-traditional security situations are becoming more complex. Third, the development of technology and society is accompanied by new security issues.

Tsang Wai-hung said that from both global and Asian perspectives, there are still too few dialogue and cooperation mechanisms related to these issues. The establishment of the Global Economic Development and Security Forum by the Boao Forum for Asia responds to the deeper demand for exchange amid changes in the international situation and provides a high-level dialogue platform focused on innovation in economic development and security-related hot topics.

It is understood that the first conference in September 2020 will gather governments, business communities and experts from Asia and around the world to actively study and discuss hot issues related to economic development and security. It is expected to produce influential outcomes such as a 2020 declaration on regional economic development and shared security.

According to the introduction, the first forum conference will expand the global perspective on security and economic and social development, coordinate action among all parties, and build a new global framework for security cooperation. It will respond to the current complex and changing international situation and work together to safeguard an environment of peace and development.
