Design Shanghai 2017 is expected to bring together 350 exhibitors from China and overseas, with many brands presenting new designs. The show will include five halls: Contemporary Design, Classic Design, Limited Edition Design, and the newly launched Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Workplace Design. The Contemporary Design Hall will present the highest level and the latest trends in contemporary home design. The Classic Design Hall will trace origins and showcase brands representing a century of Chinese and Western history and traditional craftsmanship. As one of the signature sections of Design Shanghai, the Limited Edition Design Hall will become an independent hall for the first time, allowing visitors to enjoy exquisite limited-edition designs and heirloom works. The new Kitchen and Bathroom Design Hall will focus on innovations in materials, equipment and efficient use of space, while the Workplace Design Hall will present the latest designs in office planning and office-related products.
Popular design brands including Swarovski, Boca Do Lobo, Driade, Ligne Rose, Magis, Moroso, Thonet, Tiandi, Art Design Group, CIAC EXPORT, DOMUS AUREA, Visionnaire, VISMARA DESIGN, W+S, YANG House, DuPont Corian, Dyson, Fisher & Paykel, Kinnarps and MATSU will appear at Design Shanghai. National pavilions including the Danish Design Pavilion, Swedish Design Pavilion and Portuguese Design Pavilion will also present distinctive design collections.
Highlight Two: Top design galleries enter China for the first time, presenting collectible limited-edition design works
Zaha Hadid will participate in Design Shanghai for the third consecutive year. Visitors will have the opportunity to view some of the limited-edition works she created before her passing, and to experience the Crista series designed for Atelier Swarovski Home at close range, demonstrating her exceptional design skill and continued exploration of materials. Bernardaud, a leading French porcelain brand, will exhibit for the first time and bring limited-edition works created in collaboration with renowned artists including Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, David Lynch and Julio Le Parc. Galerie Dumonteil, a well-known gallery with operations across Asia, Europe and North America, will also present rare limited-edition works by French artist Jean Michel Fiori. Another highlight is London gallery Frank Partridge, whose exhibits include clocks from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, some of which were once tribute gifts to the Qing imperial court.
Design Shanghai 2017 will launch a new themed exhibition section, the China Design Trends Gallery, and invite YANG DESIGN, one of China's most forward-looking design consultancies, to jointly present four major design trends for future markets. Following the successful 2016 special curated section, the Yang House Creation Project, designer Jamy Yang will present the latest Yang House series at Design Shanghai 2017 under the curatorial theme Creating with Time.
Highlight Three: International design stars deliver talks exploring global design trends
During the exhibition, the Design Shanghai International Design Forum will be held at the same time with strong support from AD China and Kohler. The 2017 theme is Global Design, Crafts, Manufacturing. Bringing together some of the world's most influential architects and designers, the forum has become one of Asia's most forward-looking professional summits. Confirmed speakers include renowned hotel designer DB Kim, industrial designer Karim Rashid, AFSO founder Andre Fu, British designer Benjamin Hubert, emerging British designer Bethan Laura Wood and industrial designer Jamy Yang. Ole Bouman, founding director of the Shekou Design Museum and board member of the design association, and Professor Wu Haiyan, dean of the School of Design and Art at China Academy of Art, will also speak at the forum.
Highlight Four: Design Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival links the city with a half-month design wave
Design Shanghai will officially begin a three-year in-depth partnership with Shanghai Xintiandi in 2017 to jointly promote the development of original design in China. In March, the two parties will launch the Design Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival, aiming to create the new concept of Design Shanghai in the City and link the whole city, allowing Shanghai residents and design enthusiasts to fully enjoy the pleasure brought by design.
The Design Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival will run from March 6 to March 19, 2017. During this period, Song Tao, Hou Zhengguang and Du Xinyue will be invited as chief curators, with Hu Zeming, Tian Mengran and Deng Min as co-curators. Well-known domestic and international designers including Masayuki Kurokawa and Zhang Zhoujie will curate a series of interactive installations in different areas of Shanghai Xintiandi, using themed zones and exhibits to bring the public a distinctive and integrated design culture experience and inspire boundary-free creativity.
In addition, as an important part of Design Shanghai in the City, dedicated shuttle buses will run daily from 13:00 to 21:00 during the Design Shanghai exhibition from March 8 to 11, 2017, traveling between the main venue at Shanghai Exhibition Center and Shanghai Xintiandi. Along the route, the buses will stop at selected design brand showrooms, museums and landmark buildings. Visitors may get on or off at any stop, experience a design journey, and explore the design appeal spread across Shanghai.
